Who wants to stay indoors all summer? Not this momma! And as active as my boys are, cabin fever is just not an option. But enough about me. Let's talk about your hair.

Summer is the time for outdoor fun, but it can also be tough on your hair. The Florida sun's harsh UV rays can cause your hair to become dry, damaged, and frizzy. So here are some simple tips and tricks to protect your hair through the summer.

Wear a Hat or Scarf

Seems pretty obvious, right? But let's be honest. We know you don't want to look like a frizzy mess after a day at the beach, so one way to protect your hair from the sun is to wear a hat or scarf when you are outside. Not only will it protect your hair from the sun, but it'll also make you look like a total fashionista. So, grab your shades and your favorite hat and get ready for some fun in the sun! But what if you don't want to hide your hair?

Use a Leave-In Conditioner

Another way to protect your hair from the sun is to use a leave-in conditioner. A leave-in conditioner can help to protect your hair from the sun by providing a barrier against the sun's rays. Look for a conditioner that contains UV filters, like, which will help to prevent your hair from becoming dry and damaged. You can also choose a lightweight spray-on conditioner for a more convenient option like amika vault color-lock leave in conditioner. The best thing to do would be to start your routine with amika's vault color-lock shampoo and conditioner. Click here is some more information on the importance of a good conditioner.

Avoid Heat Styling

Going on a boat? Planning a beach day? Avoid the iron! Heat styling tools like flat irons and curling wands can damage your hair, especially in combination with the sun's heat. Try to avoid heat styling as much as possible during the summer months, and opt for more natural, low-maintenance hairstyles. If you must use heat styling tools, always use a heat protectant spray, such as amika blockade heat defense serum, or Moroccan Oil's blow dry concentrate to minimize damage.

Rinse with Cold Water

This tip is one of my favorites. As simple as it sounds, rinsing with cold (or cool) water is not just good for your body, it has such a positive impact on your hair as well. After swimming or spending time in the sun, rinse your hair with cold water. Not only will it just feel good, this will also help to close the hair cuticle and prevent damage from the sun's heat. Also, after a fun filled day at the pool or the beach, you will want to remove the day's buildup from your hair. Chlorine and Salt will dry your hair, so cleanse your hair with a clarifying shampoo like RedKen Hair Cleansing Cream. Don't forget to condition with a nourishing mask like amika's soulfood nourishing mask after using your clarifying shampoo.

Use a Sunscreen for Hair

Just like your skin, your hair can benefit from the use of sunscreen. Look for a hair product that contains sunscreen to protect your hair from the sun's damaging UV rays. Apply the sunscreen to your hair and scalp before going outside, and reapply as needed. You can mix a little of your zinc based sunscreen with a leave in conditioner to protect your hair.

Fun Fact: Zinc is an essential ingredient in the protein our body uses to build hair, and even a slight deficiency may make your hair susceptible to dryness and breakage. Zinc deficiency can cause similar hair loss to iron and may also damage any remaining hair, causing it to break.

Keep Your Hair Hydrated

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Hydration is something that is always on trend. So we know that the sun's heat can cause your hair to become dry and brittle. That is why keeping your hair hydrated is so important. Keep your hair hydrated by using a deep conditioning treatment once a week and by drinking plenty of water to keep your body and hair hydrated. Your hair is a reflection of what has happened in your body, so if you stay hydrated, then your hair will reflect that. You can also use a hair oil or serum to add moisture and shine to your hair. One of my favorite oils is Moroccan Oil's Treatment Oil. Smells amazing and nourishes your hair to that perfect shine. So to sum it up, protecting your hair from the summer sun is essential to prevent damage and keep your hair looking healthy and beautiful. By wearing a hat or scarf, using a leave-in conditioner, avoiding heat styling, rinsing with cold water, using a sunscreen for hair, and keeping your hair hydrated, you can enjoy your summer without worrying about your hair getting damaged. See you soon at Fringe Hair Studio for your next hair care appointment.

Most importantly... Stay Hydrated My Friends!
