"Your color should feel like you — only more so."

Whether you're seeing your first silver strands or you've been coloring for years, choosing to cover your gray is one of the most personal decisions you'll make about your hair. There's no right or wrong here — only what feels like you. And when you've decided you want to cover, we want you to know exactly what that looks like, how we approach it at Fringe, and how to keep your color looking fresh long after you leave our chair.
Why Gray Hair Is Different
Gray hair isn't just a different shade — it's a different texture and behavior. As pigment cells slow down, the hair itself often becomes coarser, drier, and more resistant to color. That's why boxed color rarely covers gray well — it treats gray like any other hair, and gray simply doesn't play by those rules.
Covering gray successfully means working with the hair, not against it. The right formula, the right processing time, the right maintenance rhythm — all of it matters.
How Gray Coverage works at Fringe

There isn't one way to cover gray. There's your way. In your consultation, we look at how much gray you have, where it lives, your natural color, your lifestyle, and how much upkeep feels good to you. From there, we usually land on one of these approaches:
Permanent Color
The most complete coverage. Ideal when you want your gray fully hidden, edge-to-edge, in a rich, consistent tone. Root touch-ups typically follow every 4–6 weeks.
Root Touch-Ups
Between full-color visits, a targeted root refresh keeps the demarcation line invisible without processing your ends. Perfect if you love your current color and just want to stay ahead of the regrowth.
Dimensional Color & Highlights
For lower-maintenance coverage, we blend gray into a dimensional color — soft highlights and lowlights that break up the line between grown-out and freshly colored hair. Instead of a hard root every four weeks, you get a soft grow-out you can stretch to 8–10 weeks.
Demi-Permanent Gloss
A semi-permanent gloss adds shine, refreshes tone, and softly blends gray without a full commitment. Beautiful as a stand-alone service for early gray, or between permanent color visits to keep everything looking freshly done.
The Best Way to Maintain Your Color at Home

Great color at the salon is only half the story — the other half is how you care for it in the weeks that follow. Especially here in Palm Harbor, where sun, humidity, saltwater, and chlorine are quietly working against your color every single day.
Wash Less, Wash Cool
Every wash lifts a little color. Stretching to two or three washes a week, and using cool (not hot) water, keeps your tone truer for longer. Dry shampoo between washes is your best friend.
Sulfate-Free, Color-Safe Everything
Sulfates strip color faster than almost anything else. A color-safe shampoo and conditioner — we love the amika vault color-lock line — keeps your investment locked in. Skip the drugstore clarifiers.
Florida Sun Is Not a Friend to Color
UV oxidizes color the same way it fades a beach towel. A hat on the boat, a UV-protective spray on beach days, and rinsing your hair with fresh water before a swim all buy you weeks of color longevity.
Chlorine + Salt Water = Fade Accelerators
Soak your hair with fresh water and add a leave-in before you get in the pool or the Gulf — dry hair drinks up chlorine and salt, colored hair drinks it up even faster. Rinse right after. If you swim often, ask us about a chelating treatment to remove mineral buildup that dulls color and turns highlights brassy.
Gloss Between Color Visits
A gloss appointment about halfway between full-color services refreshes tone, adds shine, and can genuinely stretch your color to look salon-fresh from week one all the way to week eight.
Hydration Matters
Colored, gray-covered hair is often thirstier than it looks. A weekly deep conditioner or bond-building treatment keeps your color reflecting light beautifully instead of looking flat.
When to Come See Us
Most of our color guests visit us every 4–6 weeks for root touch-ups, with a full color and gloss every other visit. Dimensional guests can often stretch to every 8–10 weeks. Wherever you fall on that rhythm, we'll build a schedule around your life — not the other way around.
Ready When You Are

Covering gray isn't about hiding — it's about choosing. Choosing the color that feels like you. Choosing the rhythm that fits your life. Choosing to walk out of the salon feeling exactly like yourself, only more so.
Whenever you're ready, we'd love to sit down for a consultation, listen to what you want, and build the plan that gets you there.
