As a professional stylist, I want to assure you that this type of hair loss is often temporary and can be managed with the right treatments. So, let's dive into why it happens and how you can promote healthy hair regrowth.



Understanding Hair Shedding from COVID-19

During and after an illness, it's common to experience hair shedding. COVID-19 is no exception. Hair shedding happens when your hair goes through its resting phase, also known as the telogen phase. This excessive shedding is called telogen effluvium and is usually seen a few months after a stressful event like COVID-19.

While we don't know exactly why hair shedding happens with COVID-19, it's likely due to the stress of illness. Stress can cause your body to prioritize fighting the stressor, which can disrupt normal bodily functions like hair growth. Also, medications used to treat COVID-19, such as anticoagulants or immunomodulatory drugs, may contribute to hair loss.

Promoting Hair Regrowth

While hair loss can be upsetting, it's temporary and can be managed with the right treatments. Here are some tips to promote healthy hair regrowth:


Eat a Nutritious Diet - NOM NOM!!


A healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals can promote healthy hair growth. Incorporate foods that are rich in protein, iron, zinc, and vitamin B12 into your diet. Your hair is a made up of your cells. Feed the beast!




Manage Stress - CHILL OUT!!

Stress is a major contributor to hair shedding, so managing stress is crucial. Consider practicing relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises. In a world that is go go go, it is important to find time for yourself. Talk to a therapist, pet a dog (or cat), go for a run, take a nap, lock your bedroom door for 10 minutes, watch something funny... you get the point.

Get Enough Sleep - GO TO BED!!!


Sleep is essential for overall health, including healthy hair growth. Aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night to support healthy hair regrowth. Your body repairs when you are asleep. Put down the hand computer, turn off the TV. Make getting those Zzz's a priority.


Avoid Harsh Hair Treatments - BE GENTLE!!

Nourish your scalp. Avoid harsh hair treatments like too much coloring, perming, or straightening until your hair has fully recovered. Be gentle when styling or brushing your hair to prevent further damage. Be nice to yourself.



Try Hair Growth Products - SAMPLE ANYONE??


There are products on the market that make their claims to regrowing your hair. For example products like minoxidil (a topical treatment applied to the scalp) and finasteride (an oral medication used to treat hair loss in men) may help promote healthy hair regrowth. But there are some more natural products available as well. Certain essential oils have claims to stimulating hair growth, and there are a number of supplements that promote healthy hair.
